Most agree that sitting in traffic is a massive waste of time, and often cite a frustrating commute to and from work as reason to resist returning to the office. In January, geolocation technology specialist TomTom released its annual Traffic Index for 2023. California is the only state that had two cities rank in the top 10: San Francisco and Los Angeles. The latter is notorious for its bad traffic but still came in way down at the No. 9 spot, while the Bay Area city landed in the top three.

Oct 13 (Reuters) - Digital mapping specialist TomTom (TOM2.AS) reported lower than expected revenue at its main location technology business on Friday, sending its shares down 7%. Sales in the auto sector rose 32% but the enterprise sector's sales fell 20%, reflecting lower volumes of some renewed contracts. Total group sales rose 6% on the year to 144.1 million euros. Finance chief Taco Titulaer said growth in car production might stabilise in the forth quarter, though he did not expect TomTom to suffer from it. Titulaer said TomTom saw new opportunities in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and was "investing time and money and people" into the technology.

Overture is aiming to establish a baseline for maps data so that companies can use it to build and operate their own maps. For many companies, Google 's and Apple 's maps aren't ideal, because they don't provide access to the underlying data. For example, app makers pay per thousand Google Maps lookups through an application programming interface (API). Apple allows access to Apple Maps for free for native app developers, but web app developers need to pay. Overture is only offering the underlying map data, leaving it up to companies to build their own software on top of it.

More and more people are looking for a reprieve from the endless scroll of social media, breaking news alerts and e-mail notifications. There's a recent rise in Gen Zers in the U.S. buying "dumb phones" to help limit the time they spend on apps like Twitter and TikTok. And as people set stricter boundaries around how much they interact with tech, they're turning their attention to travel. InsureMyTrip, a travel insurance comparison website, ranked the best cities to visit for a "digital detox" based on an overall rating across four categories: relaxation, activities, safety, and access to the internet. To stick to your digital detox, look to one of the featured destinations that received high marks for availability of evening tours and activities.

But the Amsterdam-based company said operating expenses declined year-on-year in the first quarter, helped by the reorganisation of its maps unit it announced last year. "The decrease mainly reflects efficiency gains realized in the research and development activities for our geographic data," TomTom said. The company reported quarterly operating profit of 2.6 million euros ($2.88 million), while analysts polled by the company had forecast a loss of 12 million euros. It had posted operating loss of 19.8 million euros in the first quarter of 2022 and a loss of 4.5 million euros in the fourth quarter. Its first-quarter revenue rose 10% to 141 million euros, against analysts' forecast of 132 million euros, driven by 12% growth in its biggest location technology unit and 34% growth in automotive.
Feb 3 (Reuters) - Dutch navigation and digital mapping company TomTom (TOM2.AS) raised its 2023 revenue forecast on Friday, after posting better-than-expected fourth-quarter revenue driven by strong automotive performance. After being hit by the global chip shortage that has disrupted the automotive and electronics industries, TomTom is now starting to benefit from the recovery in global car production. The Amsterdam-based firm, whose customers include Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) and Microsoft (MSFT.O), forecast revenue for the current fiscal year in a range of 540 million euros to 580 million euros ($588.33 million-$631.91 million), with free cash flow of between 0% and +5% of the revenue. The group had previously guided for a revenue of 500-550 million euros, with 425-475 million euros generated from its core location technology business, and free cash flow at breakeven. The company posted revenue of 139 million euros for the quarter ended Dec.31, beating company-compiled analysts' average forecast of 120 million euros.

TAIPEI, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Foxconn-led (2317.TW) electric vehicle consortium MIH announced plans on Tuesday for its first car, a boxy single row three-seater which it hopes will be popular with one-child families in Asia. Betting on strong demand in Asian markets for smaller electric cars, MIH Consortium plans to build its first car, which it calls Project X, in 2023 and start mass production the following year, though no customers have been confirmed, the company said. "Build your own vehicle with Project X," Cheng said, referring to the car's modular design. MIH is eyeing not only Taiwan, but also India, Thailand, Indonesia and Japan as prospective markets for the three-seater. "The American market tends towards large cars," Cheng told reporters, adding that this model would suit a single-child family.
Oct 14 (Reuters) - Dutch navigation and digital mapping company TomTom (TOM2.AS) on Friday raised its 2022 outlook, as increased car production and higher location technology sales drove third-quarter results. It had previously guided for a revenue of 470-510 million euros, with 380-420 million euros generated from location technology. "Macroeconomic uncertainties and inflationary pressures have an impact on global car production as well as our cost levels," finance chief Taco Titulaer said in a statement. Still, quarterly sales were boosted by increased car production volumes in TomTom's core markets, the company said. The group's total revenue came in at 136.3 million euros, beating analysts' 126-million-euro estimate.
